The Rock: Dwayne Johnson Producing Movie About Paige

For long-time fans of WWE’s Paige, we’ve got some good news. No, the former WWE Divas Champion hasn’t made any announcements of an in-ring return just yet. But we are going to see a version of her onscreen, thanks to Dwayne Johnson. The Rock has just announced that he’ll be producing a movie centered on the life of Paige.

The film in development, Fighting With My Family, will star Florence Pugh and Jack Lowden. The Rock himself will also make a cameo in the film. It seems to be a passion project for him as much as anything else. Saraya Jade-Bevis, commonly known in-ring as Paige, came from a family all involved in the business. Her parents, Ricky Knight and Sweet Saraya, as well as her brothers Roy and Zak, are all pro-wrestlers. They run the Norwich-based World Association of Wrestling (WAW) promotion. For The Rock, a film about such a family simply make sense.

But a family with that much going on in the ring probably has stories to tell outside the ring as well. Telling those stories seems to be Johnson’s goal, as his own company Seven Bucks is spearheading the production.

Fighting With My Family

Back in 2012, Johnson was in London shooting for Fast and Furious when the British documentary The Wrestlers: Fighting With My Family came on. The documentary followed the real-life Paige and her family as they struggled to make it big in the wrestling world. It became the inspiration for, and the basis of, Johnson’s newest project.

“Not only was I intrigued by this loving and wild family, but I also felt it’s the kind of narrative that would make an amazing movie,” The Rock shared.

BREAKING: Our @sevenbucksprod is excited to announce production on a cool project we've been working on for years based on a very unique and gritty professional wrestling family and a their daughter's journey into the spotlight of the WWE. "Fighting With My Family" Years ago (2012) while shooting Fast & Furious in London, I was up at 3am (too much caffeine) and stumbled upon a documentary on a UK station about a local wrestling family and their daughter's unlikely journey into the global spotlight. That daughter, is current WWE Women's Superstar, Paige. The family strong element I saw in the doc, is what grabbed my attention. That no matter how crazy life gets, no matter how dysfunctional our families can sometimes be and especially regardless of how much we fight – we're always there for each other when it counts. That's what families do. My gut said there was a great movie to be made so I sent to my agent Brad Slater at WME who loved it. He sent it to my long time ace producer Kevin Misher, who immediately responded to the doc and he thought we should go after one of our favorite writer/directors for material like this, Stephen Merchant. Merchant, being from the UK, locked in to a strong POV and vision of how gritty and heartfelt this film needs to be and the rest is history. Pleasure to partner with WWE Studios and Film 4 to bring this cool story to life. Paige and I both know what it's like to come from a wrestling family who's had it's good and hard times. Her and I have talked about this project for years now and we're all excited to bring her and her family's story to life. Cool casting announcements coming this week! #FightingWithMyFamily #SevenBucksProds #MisherFilms #WWEFilms #Film4 #BevisFamily #SquaredCircleDNA

Filming will begin this month in Los Angeles and London; no release date has been set yet. It will be co-produced by WWE Studios and Film 4. Stephen Merchant, co-creator of The Office, will serve as writer and director.

The Anti-Diva

Paige’s rise to popularity was meteoric among the company’s female performers. Throughout both NXT and the WWE, her pale-skinned, gothic look quickly stood out among a host of glitzy and colorful divas. Her in-ring performance impressed as well, and soon she was hoisting the NXT Women’s Championship belt above her head. Her accolades would soon include WWE’s Divas Championship.

Due to a combination of wellness policy violations and injuries, however, she hasn’t been seen in the ring since June 26, 2016. It was later revealed that she had undergone neck surgery. Fans have been twiddling their thumbs in anticipation for a return, perhaps to challenge Charlotte for the WWE Raw Women’s Championship.
