The most recent Game of Thrones trailer shows us three protagonists making the long walk toward their respective destinies. And while Jon Snow considers how to battle the White Walker hoard north, we’re certain to get a run-in between Daenerys Targaryen and Cersei Lannister soon. Do the Lannisters have enough gold to buy a chance against the Mother of Dragons? How rich exactly is the family leading Westeros?
To figure this out, we thought it would be appropriate to compare of one head of state to another. We must assume that Cersei Lannister is inheriting her father Tywin Lannister’s wealth. In real life, though, we have a rich head of state of our own in Donald Trump.
To give us an apt idea of how rich the Lions are, let’s see how they stack up to the Don’s.
A Lannister Always Pays His Debts
As the patriarch of Westeros’s richest family, Tywin Lannister certainly deserves to be as feared as he is. Game of Thrones lore generally indicates that his family is the single most powerful among the Great Houses. And it’s due to his own handiwork. His own father once nearly undid the wealth and power of his house with bad investments in his time. But Tywin, shrewd and calculating as any businessman and politician, rebuilt that wealth from the ground up.
Now we see the Lannisters’ wealth on display in the size of their army, in the way they can secure resources and alliances from other Great Houses like the Tyrells and Martells. We’ve been able to assume that his family deals in plenty of trade, especially given the goldmines under Casterly Rock.
According to Forbes‘ Fictional 15 list, his net worth comes up to about $2.1 billion. That’s good for number 12 on the list.
Trump Towering Tall
The President of the United States, before getting elected, was quite the business mogul himself. Unlike Tywin Lannister, Trump did inherit a sizeable wealth from his father. This fortune became the foundation on which he built greater riches.
As the CEO of his own company, Donald Trump’s wealth grew from a variety of appreciating assets and streams: real estate, largely in New York; golf clubs and resorts; branded businesses; and his appearances on television shows such as his noted The Apprentice.
Forbes estimates his net worth at $3.5 billion.
If those numbers are accurate, we can safely say that Trump’s family is wealthier than the Lannisters by about 50%. And Trump should just be thankful he doesn’t have to spend a cent of it worrying about an invading bunch of dragons.
Game of Thrones season 7 premieres on July 16, 2017.
