It looks like a season away from The Vampire Diaries has only made fans miss Nina Dobrev more. Since leaving the CW show at the end of he sixth season, fans have been waiting for Nina Dobrev’s Elena Gilbert to make her way back to Mystic Falls. In a recent interview, the actress herself finally addressed the question of when she’ll return. Well… sort of, at least.
Asked in an interview with Huffington Post on whether she’ll be back for The Vampire Diaries’ eighth and final season, Dobrev had this to say: “I haven’t ever told secrets in the past, and I’m definitely not gonna start now. So, sorry guys, I’m not allowed to talk about that.”
The Vampire Diaries Season 8: Bonnie or Elena?
From 2009-2015, Dobrev starred on the supernatural drama, alongside Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder. When the time came for her to call it quits, the season six finale presented a clever route for the character’s exit without killing her. At Jo and Alaric’s wedding, Kai gatecrashes the ceremony and casts a spell, linking the lives of Bonnie and Elena. As a result of the spell, Elena is knocked unconscious while Bonnie lives. The magic binding them goes both ways, forcing Damon to choose between them.
Nina Dobrev’s elusive answer has fans guessing that she will, indeed, be back for the finale. If not, what other reason would she have to avoid the question like the plague? It’s unconfirmed, of course. But every sign points to a return.
After all she’s already expressed interest in it before. “Nina has always said she’d be happy to return for a series finale,” executive producer Julie Plec said, in an EW interview.
If this is the case, we’ll have to sadly watch Bonnie die, due to the curse. But it need not be an onscreen tragedy; one theory suggests that the series will flash forward 60 years, giving her a full life before Elena comes back from sleep.
An Expanding World
Since The Vampire Diaries first debuted, the series has introduced a whole mythology. And because of its spin-off, The Originals, that backstory is only going to get bigger and deeper.
The season 8 finale isn’t going to be the end of the narrative surrounding their world. But anticipation for the conclusion of Elena, Damon and Stefan’s arc is surely to run high, first. In a TV Line Interview, Plec explains that the series’ farewell season will be “a season of finallys”.
The Vampire Diaries season 8 will conclude on March 10, 2017. Excited yet? Let’s hear about it in the comments below!
