The Vampire Diaries Season 8: Nina Dobrev Shows She Can Be Friends With Ian Somerhalder

Amidst the drama happening in Mystic Falls, some real-life drama is rumored to be happening on The Vampire Diaries set. Sure, Elena and Damon have their own supernatural love story going on, and that’s great. But fans have also been wondering about Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder’s relationship. Can they still be friends?

Shortly after The Vampire Diaries premiered in 2009, the two started dating. The romance blossomed for quite a few years, and with the show taking off in popularity, they seemed perfect for each other. But then the two broke up in 2013.

Somerhalder subsequently got together with Twilight’s Nikki Reed, who played Rosalie Hale in the other vampire romance. The pair dated for six months before getting engaged. They married in 2015, which is when Dobrev left TVD.

The Drama Is In The Media

Naturally, the coincidental timing led many to assume that Dobrev left the show because of her former boyfriend’s new relationship. After all, common etiquette in Hollywood apparently dictates that you can’t date a friend’s ex. Hollywood Life once even suggested that Dobrev was dissing Reed on Instagram.

But these feud rumors have since, finally, been put to rest by the trio themselves. First, there was this photo Ian Somerhalder posted, featuring the three looking all cozy, and well, comfortable with each other.

Chilling with these two… After years of websites pretending these two badass ladies knew each other well and baseless, false information of back stabbing and hatred from low-brow websites filled the minds and hearts of fans… They finally were able to get together for their first real dinner. Let's stop spreading hate everyone, there's already too much of that right now in our world. Join in on the love. Only love here- always has been always will be. Media companies preying on the passion from vulnerable and or impressionable minds of fans to sell advertising through click-though traffic is a disease in our society. It's poisonous. Let's finish this series with respect and kindness and continue that in our lives. I think it's time. What do think?

“Let’s stop spreading the hate, everyone,” he noted on the post. Reed posted the same photo with a lengthy caption of her own: “For the last few years, we thought addressing any baseless rumors with silence was the best way… I now see that silence was taken as an opportunity to fill in the blanks with even more falsities… and we, yes WE, have a moral responsibility to young girls to end that narrative…”

Nina put the cherry on top with a photo of her own, showing how much fun she was having with “Team Somereed”. So who said that ex’s can’t just be friends? If you don’t believe it, well, meet Ian and Nina.

Saying Farewell

There’s at least another good reason for the three to clear the air now. The Vampire Diaries season 8 is a month away from wrapping up, bringing the long-running series to a close. By squashing any persistent rumors of on-set drama now, they ensure that the finale gets the undivided attention that it deserves.

After all, fans aren’t likely to enjoy the final curtain call of Damon, Elena, and Stefan if they were too busy thinking of all the heat behind the scenes.

Dobrev, in particular, was expressive of the weight in saying goodbye. She posted a note on Instagram as she finished filming her final scene:

Dearest TVD family, It feels like it was just yesterday that I was saying goodbye. And yet two years have passed and here we are again. This is my true final goodbye, as today I shot my last scene of the Vampire Diaries forever. Coming back for the series finale has been a whirlwind of emotion, nostalgia, love, tears of joy and bittersweet endings. It feels like the beautiful closure we all needed, myself included, and I couldn't have been happier to come home to be with my TVD set family and friends. I feel the fans family will also be happy with the show's conclusion when they tune in to watch the last episode air in a few short weeks. From the bottom of my heart, I send you my biggest thanks for the countless years of implicit dedication, passion, support, and undying love from all the fans that have stuck with us on this truly amazing and beautiful journey. As this last chapter ends, we welcome and look forward to going on to the next adventure and hope that you continue to follow us as our new journeys begin. I grew up on this show and am eternally grateful for all the opportunities it has given me, and so thankful for each and every person who worked on The Vampire Diaries over the last 8 years. We are all pieces of a big puzzle and without every truly amazing cast and crew member, this magical puzzle would not be complete. Thank you for all your hard work, friendship and love. You have touched my heart in ways you will never know. Sending looch smooches, Love, Katherine, Amara, Tatia, and of course, Elena Gilbert. #TVDforever #FangsForTheMemories ❤ Ps.
