We’re down the wire, and it’s finally time to say goodbye to these beloved characters of mystic falls. In these last four episodes of The Vampire Diaries, we’ll get to see Nina Dobrev’s character Elena Gilbert wake up from a magically-induced coma.
She has two quick questions: Why happened? Why am I here right now? These are exactly the same questions we have right now. Why did Elena wake up too soon?
The Vampire Diaries Will End On A High Note
Now that Dobrev is back, Vampire Diaries will surely end on a high note. Fans, after all, have been waiting for a long time to see her character, Elena, back in the story once again. Perhaps, this is the actress’ way of showing gratitude to the series that made her a household name.
In a 10-second clip, the series took us back to the earlier seasons as they showed the main characters’ high school lives. Remember that Elena, Bonnie (Kat Graham), and Caroline (Candice King) were once cheerleaders? The clip showed a framed picture of them during their time in the squad.
Elena was then seen in the reflection of the trophy case, asking the questions we are all seeking answers for. What happened since the end of Season 6 when her character said goodbye to the show?
At the end of Season 6, Elena was put in a magically-induced coma, effectively tying her fate to Bonnie’s. This is an ala-Voldemort and Harry Potter scenario–neither survives while the other lives. Elena cannot live while Bonnie does, which means the only thing that can wake Elena up is Bonnie’s death.
Of course, that did not stop the show from mentioning Elena a number of times. They even used her character as a plot line at times. But how she woke up in the show is still a mystery until her first episode airs, that is.
Nina Almost Did Not Come Back
There were a lot of speculations in the past about the actress’ return. Remember, she left amid a bitter breakup with fellow The Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder. Many thought that because of this, Dobrev will have second thoughts about coming back to the show.
That proved to be wrong when Dobrev posted an Instagram post of The Vampire Diaries script with her name. She said: “I know it’s Thursday, but this is not a TBT #BackOnSet #TVDForever.” So now, fans have something to look forward to when they catch the series finale on March 10.
