It’s hard to think about anything else when The Final Problem, aired on Sunday night. And that might be because, well, the final time we’ll see Benedict Cumberbatch in his Sherlock outfit. The truth is, Sherlock Season 5 might not come at all for the fans. This is the problem we all face together.
Fans of Sherlock are so used to waiting for three to four years before a new season begins with Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman (Dr. John Watson) again. But this time, the wait might just be forever. Since Season 4 began with The Six Thatchers, the question that has been in everyone’s mind is whether this is the last season we’ll see Cumberbatch and Freeman together.
Sherlock Season 5 might not be possible?
Steven Moffat, one of the writers for Sherlock, once told The Telegraph, that he is willing to do Sherlock Season 5. However, that issue is not entirely up to him. There are many considerations that must be made such as the actors’ schedules and availability.
Sherlock catapulted both Cumberbatch and Freeman to fame. Today, they are one of the most highly sought actors in Hollywood. Recently, Cumberbatch played a charismatic titular character in Doctor Strange. Freeman did The Hobbit and many others.
Back in July, Moffat said he would be “moderately surprised” if Season 4 turns out to be the last one they’ll make as a group. Still, it would not be impossible if there will be no next season in the horizon. He never promised to have more episodes in each season (there are only three to four episodes per season) because that’s just the way they roll.
It’s a wait-and-see game
For Cumberbatch, it’s a wait-and-see game. While he never said that he wants to stop playing Sherlock Holmes, he did not promise to come back for a Season 5. Instead, he likes to think that every season, they are completing something final with the popular BBC detective series.
Mark Gatiss, another one of Sherlock’s writer and who also plays Mycroft Holmes, said it’s difficult to manage everyone’s diaries. The success of Doctor Strange, for example, would surely make Cumberbatch more in demand than ever before. Hopefully, we’ll still get to see a glimpse of Sherlock Season 5.
