For weeks, we have been teased with the prospect of seeing the third Holmes sibling. And sure enough, Sherlock Season 4 Episode 2 didn’t disappoint. There’s a curve ball, however, the third Holmes sibling is a sister.
Sherrinford was the name we played with the past weeks. He was supposed to be the eldest Holmes brother (the name being a reference to non-Doyle Sherlock stories). And also the one that takes care of the Holmes estate. But by the end of Episode 2, Sherlock introduced us to Eurus Holmes.
Sherlock Season 4 Episode 2: Who is Eurus?
Back in Season 3, Sherlock told Dr. John Watson that Eurus was a story Mycroft Holmes told him when they were kids. According to the story, Eurus (a terrifying force) “gets us all in the end.” Fast forward to Sherlock Season 4 Episode 2, Eurus said her name means East Wind. And also that the Holmes are fond of giving their children strange-sounding names.
Sherlock did not recognize his own sister even in his drug-addled state. By this, we can conclude that Sherlock didn’t grow up with her. As much as his relationship with Mycroft is tumultuous, Sherlock seems to know just how his brother thinks and acts even before he does. He also never had any recollection of a sister or a brother.
In the last two episodes, it was only Mycroft and Lady Smallwood that seem to know about another sibling. One of the last scenes of Sherlock Season 4 Episode 2 showed Mycroft’s note to call Sherrinford at 2PM (on Episode 1, it was 3PM).
How did Eurus fool us?
Did any of you notice that Faith, Elizabeth, and John’s therapist are the same person? Sherlock kept on theorizing about “hiding in plain sight.” It’s a clue for all of us, only we didn’t see it until the very last second.
It’s quite curious how a bad wig and contact lens can blind us to the fact that these are the same person. John, specifically, should be questioned. He lived with a detective for years, and he couldn’t tell that his therapist looks exactly like that girl he’s flirting with on text and in the bus?
Sherlock Season 4 Episode 2 surely left us with a lot of burning questions. With only one episode left for Season 4, we can only hope the creators have enough time to give us the finale we deserve.
