You’ll be seeing more of Archie and the gang! Riverdale Season 2 is sure to happen, after The CW announced the renewal on Tuesday. Loosely based on the characters from Archie Comics, Riverdale tells the story of Archie Andrews (KJ Apa), Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse), and Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch).
Riverdale Ratings Continue To Rise; Season 2 Confirmed
Essentially, the show is deemed as a cross between Gossip Girl and Twin Peaks. According to a report from Variety, the first season initially did not have stellar ratings, however, caught up with at a healthy 78% mark when the other episodes kicked in. The Archie Comics-inspired series debuted in January and has been averaging 1.2 million viewers weekly, making it the network’s No. 2 non-superhero series, just behind Supernatural.
The renewal is not surprising. In fact, the same publication revealed that Archie Comics just signed a new development deal with Warner Bros. Television. Moreover, the show’s first season is currently “averaging a 0.43 rating in the 18-49 demographic.”
When it comes to the inspiration for this TV adaptation, KJ Apa said, “I would say it’s most similar to the most recent comic by Fiona Staples and Mark Waid, with a really subversive and dark take to it. You’re still getting the classic love triangle with Archie, Veronica and Betty. You still have those classic, iconic characters, but you get a little deeper and a little darker into their lives.”
Meanwhile, actor Ross Butler, who plays the role of Reggie Mantle in the series, celebrated the good news on Twitter with an adorable photo of the cast all together at dinner.
“Thanks for tuning in everyone,” he wrote. “We’re all so excited to keep it rollin!”

Riverdale Season 2 Release Date
While no release date has been officially announced, fans can expect that the second premiere will air sometime in 2018. Deadline also notes that the show is actually the first on the CW network to get a renewal. Together with other fan favorites like Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Riverdale is the network’s freshman show that stands apart, not rooted in any superhero mythos.
Riverdale is from Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios. It has Robert Aguirre-Sacasa, Greg Berlanti, Jon Goldwater, and Sarah Schechter at the helm as executive producers.
