Nashville season 5 broke viewers’ hearts when they witnessed Rayna dying on the recent episode. Along with Deacon (played by Charles Esten) and daughters Maddie and Daphne (played by Lennon Stella and Maisy Stella respectively), fans cried as they watched their favorite Nashville family go through such a hard time and see Connie Britton leaving the show for good.
However, one question plagued viewers after this episode. With Britton exiting the show, will there be a new female character to take her place?
Nashville Season 5: What Marshall Herskovitz’s Has To Say
Nashville season 5 is looking grim with Rayna’s recent death but the show is obviously going to continue. Will someone else replace Rayna’s spot?
TVLine asked co-showrunner Marshall Herskovitz about this. But his answer didn’t really give out much. “I just can’t comment.” Herskovitz said as he laughed. According to him, he can’t reveal anything regarding Nashville since he believes that the experience and feel of watching a show is “altered” when the audience knows what’s coming.
That seems fair enough. But many are wondering whether or not Deacon will find a new love after Rayna considering the two are practically soulmates.

Whether we see a new character or not, we’ll just have to wait.
Connie Britton Leaving
Meanwhile, what does Connie Britton feel about her character Rayna dying on the show? TVLine was also able to ask the actress about it and according to the interview, it was Britton’s decision to leave.
Britton shared that there were a lot of reasons behind her leaving the show. But in the end, she made sure that the timing was going to be right. Britton said that Nashville has always been her priority. Fans can see for themselves how heartbreaking the death scene was which only showed how dedicated Britton was in the show and in that particular episode.
The 49-year-old actress also shared that when the show was moved from ABC to CMT, and with the addition of Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz, she was confident that Nashville would be in “a good place”. Britton said that Nashville can continue “indefinitely” because of this, even without her.
