How I Met Your Mother Spinoff: Why It’s Not Smart To Do It

The confirmation of a How I Met Your Mother spinoff titled How I Met Your Dad have fans of the original series divided between the “should they?” or “shouldn’t they?”. They have all sorts of reaction to the spinoff, although there was never any clear-cut indication that fans want a spinoff of the hit CBS series.

In 2014, there was an attempt from HIMYM‘s creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays to produce a spinoff. It didn’t come to life. But now, it looks like 20th is revisiting the idea with This Is Us creators Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger. Although Thomas and Bays will co-executive produce the show, Aptaker and Berger will be the showrunners.

How I Met Your Mother spinoff is a spinoff of a spinoff

Okay, that doesn’t make a lot of sense right now, but let’s try to break it down. The original How I Met Your Mother is a kind of spinoff of the 90s hit series Friends. Even Thomas and Bays admitted that it was inspired by the series that catapulted Jennifer Aniston to fame. The How I Met Your Mother spinoff will be a spinoff of a series that was considered by many as a spinoff.

Don’t get me wrong, there is a lot of love for How I Met Your Mother, especially because it offers a new perspective on life and love. Unlike Friends, it was more about finding love than friendship. But that’s all the difference between the sitcoms.

In a lot of ways, How I Met Your Mother spinoff will be doomed to repeat the mistakes of the series on which it is based. It will be compared to Friends and it will fail miserably in trying to revive those turn-of-the-century storylines that endeared Friends to a lot of 90s kids.

How can you compete with such an amazing HIMYM cast?

There is no way this spinoff can recreate another Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris). Harris’ portrayal of the womanizer Barney was inspired, and it will be hard to duplicate such success. The same can be said for Josh Radnor, Alyson Hannigan, Jason Segel, and Cobie Smulders). Even Ranjit, the Bangladeshi cab driver that appeared with the gang in several episodes, is a flawless character.

There is no word yet on when the How I Met Your Mother spinoff will premiere, but it is certainly interesting how the creators will give justice to it.
