How I Met Your Mother Spinoff Delayed: This Is Us Is the Priority

Remember those talks that there would be a How I Met Your Mother spinoff? Apparently, it’s going to take a while for that to happen. You read that right. If you thought we were getting more How I Met Your Mother material anytime soon, you’re wrong. It’s going to be put in hold in place of This Is Us.

How I Met Your Mother Spinoff: Not For A Long While

The How I Met Your Mother spinoff entitled How I Met Your Father is put on hold indefinitely. Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker, the two writers behind the spinoff, is reportedly joining Dan Fogelman as co-showrunners on This Is Us season 2. This is why the spinoff is being pushed back, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Jonnie Davis, 20th TV President of Creative Affairs, shared his thoughts on having Berger and Aptaker on board This Is Us. Davis describes both as “incredible talents”. He says that the contribution they made to This Is Us are extraordinary seeing as their writings are bold and original. He continues that the two are valuable to Fogelman and they are “thrilled” that they’ll remain with their studio for a while.

Hooray for This Is Us fans. But for HIMYM fans, guess this means we’ll have to wait until they pick up the spinoff someday.

How I Met Your Father

How I Met Your Father wasn’t the only spinoff planned. From 2005 to 2014, How I Met Your Mother ran for nine seasons. It was in 2013 when How I Met Your Dad was also planned to air starring Greta Gerwig. Meg Ryan was supposedly going to be the narrator. However, CBS wanted to rework the pilot but creators, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas weren’t willing to change it. This resulted into the show not making it into the schedule.

CBS Executive Nina Tassler once shared that they’ve reached out to the creators to talk about reworking the pilot. But it’s still not happening. Tassler acknowledged that they run into these issues in the industry and can only hope it can be resolved.

Meanwhile, this isn’t the first time Berger and Aptaker are working with Fogelman. The three worked on Fox’s Grandfathered and ABC’s The Neighbors. It was in late 2016 that talks of the spinoff circulated with Thomas and Bays as executive producers. But as for the cast lineup, no confirmed news of it was announced.
