Alright, Japril fans. You wanted it, now you’re getting it. The eagerly-awaited episode of Grey’s Anatomy season 13 featuring Jackson and April is airing this March 16. And in its pivotal moments, we’ll get quite a glimpse of how the pair’s relationship has really evolved over the last few seasons.
While the two were only pulled up to the main cast in season 7, Jackson Avery and April Kepner have had their moments of stealing the show. Their rocky love life has made them one of the biggest will-they-won’t-they couples in the series. The recent Grey’s Anatomy season 13 episode Who Is He (And What Is He To You)? gives fans hope that they’ll eventually get their happy ending – though not in the way we totally expect.
The Preview: Grey’s Anatomy Season 13 Episode 16
Jackson and April initially stepped out of the hospital for a work trip – they’re assigned to conduct an operation out of Grey Sloan. The episode begins with tension between the two (as there often is). In fact, Jackson comes off as even more brusque than usual.
Sarah Drew, who plays April, shares with TV Line: “She realizes from the beginning that there’s something going on with him. He’s unusually cross with her, even in terms of their working relationship.”
And then April soon discovers the cause behind it: Jackson is possibly headed for a reunion with his long-lost father. The confrontation set to happen with Jackson and his father immediately switches a light on for April. One moment, she’s confused by his manners, and then the next, they all make sense. Even though they’d been previously married, it’s not the easiest thing in the world for them to read each other.
And in the episode preview, April speaks her mind: “When were you going to tell me you found your father? Your long-lost, deadbeat dad?”
Drew, however, says that the situation only draws out more empathy and patience out of April toward Jackson. And she doesn’t soften up for him, either; the two are all about tough love.
“I love the way the scene plays out. She doesn’t say, ‘You need to go because you’re going through something, and I care about you and want you to figure it out’. No, she says ‘You need to go because you can’t do your job right now, and I need you to do your job’.”
It’s a good embodiment of their relationship. The two clearly still care for each other. In a manner of speaking, April is pushing Jackson not for what she wants, but for what he needs. And as far as Grey’s Anatomy goes, that’s love.
