Alex Karev is off the hook, for now. And it’s honestly thanks to Meredith that he’s even able to walk free. If it weren’t for Meredith helping cover up for him, Alex could be sitting in the slammer right about now. Is there still any hope for an Alex-Mer romance to be kindled? Actor Justin Chambers, who’s played Alex since the first season of Grey’s Anatomy weighs in: “Anything is possible,” he says.
Just to recap: Alex found surgical intern Andrew DeLuca on top of an inebriated Jo Wilson one night and assumed the worst. Enraged, he then beat Andrew to a bloody pulp with his own two hands. He did come to his senses when he realized Andrew was hanging on to his life by inches and brought him to Grey Sloan. Still, he hid the fact that he was the one who had assaulted Andrew.
A Possible Romance?
Meredith figured out that Alex was the one who had attacked Andrew, but instead of exposing him, she did what she could to keep him looking clean.
Of course, Grey’s Anatomy fans who prefer that the two long-time friends get together might read into Mer’s move. After all, Alex and Jo look pretty much done. They’ve been playing the will-they-won’t-they game for too long. It’s time for Alex to move on, and for good. And maybe Mer – who’s watched his back since the very first season – could be good for him.
“That happens in life,” Justin Chambers tells TV Line. “Where people who are friends become lovers.”
E! News has made a case for the “Merlex” pairing before as something that Grey’s Anatomy has had coming for a long time. “Alex’s friendship with Mer has been a roadblock in his relationship with Jo for a while now, and that’s because Jo can see what they can’t see… To ignore what’s clearly between these two wouldn’t feel right.”
"Heroes aren't more special – more courageous – than the rest of us. They hurt. They break. They bleed. But sometimes, every once and a while, when it matters, they get it right and that changes everything. A hero is only human but that's the point. If they can do it, so can you. So, you keep going. You don't give up. You stand tall. You fight. You always show up to save the day." #GreysAnatomy
A Different Kind Of Love
However, Chambers goes on to clarify that it doesn’t look very likely, either: “Personally, I don’t see that happening right now. I think it would be kind of strange.”
Ellen Pompeo, who plays Meredith Grey, expressed the same sentiment last year. “I think they’re too close,” she said, “Too much like brother and sister… I think that just because you’re so in love with someone in one way doesn’t mean it’s a romantic love. But they certainly do understand each other a lot.”
Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Shonda Rhimes will most certainly get the final say on whether these two co-interns-turned-co-workers take a chance on such a relationship.
