Game of Thrones season 7 is going to be all about fire and ice. This week, HBO decided to tease the specific premiere date through a long and arduous process torture of its fan base. Yes, that’s something that the show is quite used to doing, actually. It streamed a video of a huge block of ice in which the premiere date was hidden. With fans screaming “Dracarys!” to speed up the melting, the ice eventually gave way to reveal the date: July 16.
The premiere date follows the reveal of a teaser poster which had the hashtag #GoTS7 on a wall of ice, with wisps of flame dancing around it. HBO seems pretty intent on delivering a specific message. It’s this: the Song of Ice and Fire is reaching its climax.
The War That Matters
Accompanying the Game of Thrones season 7 premiere date reveal was a teaser video. This one showed off the sigils of the various Houses of Westeros, overlain with the characters’ voices, saying significant lines of previous seasons.
The great war is here. #GoTS7 premieres 7.16.

It starts with a close up of the three dragons of Targaryen, with Daenerys speaking about her father, the Mad King. We see the stag of Baratheon, with King Robert’s voice accompanying it; the lion of Lannister shows up as well, along with Cersei’s and Joffrey’s voices. Next comes the kraken of Greyjoy, and then the flower of Tyrell – which is incinerated in a wave of green wildfire. Daenerys then proclaims a bit of her famous “I will break the wheel” line, and the sigils all come crashing down.
It ends with one of the ominous patterns on the ground courtesy of the White Walkers, and Jon Snow alluding to the impending battle with them: “There’s only one war that matters – the Great War. And it is here.”
What To Expect
Since the series has diverged from the books, Game of ThronesS7 predictions are all over the place. The one thing we can generally be assured of, is that Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen will finally meet face-to-face. The show’s two biggest protagonists (sorry, Tyrion) have been caught being filmed together. Their meeting will likely set off the climax, resolving both the war of Westeros and up North.
The only question is: will Snow and Targaryen join forces? Or will they clash? Other predictions are quite scattered, but each with merit.
Some think that Cersei will repeat history, setting King’s Landing on fire when all is lost for her, as King Aerys II did. And once again, she may be slain by a regretful Jaime Lannister. Some think that Bran Stark will be the one to reveal Jon’s true heritage. And others are insisting that were going to see a dark side of Sansa we’ve never expected before now.
We’ll see for ourselves when Game of Thrones season 7 premieres on July 16.
