Like every other riveting Empire episode, last night’s did not fail viewers in terms of intensity. Entitled What We May Be, the episode centered on Cookie’s (Taraji P. Henson) life: her hidden past, struggles, and budding romance with Angelo (Taye Diggs).
Through flashbacks, viewers saw Cookie as a child and why she had no choice but to stick by Lucious’s (Terrence Howard) side.

Empire Season 3 spoilers: Goodbye Lucious, Hello Angelo?
Any Empire fan knows that the love story between Cookie and Lucious is anything but calm. Despite Lucious’s destructive antics much to Cookie’s disapproval, they always end up getting back together. Last night’s episode was a true shocker, as fans saw how and why Cookie was trying to get as far away as she can from her dangerous ex-husband.
Lest her family falls apart, Cookie wants Lucious out of the picture after he married Boo Boo Kitty aka Annika (Grace Gealey) to save himself. Now that Cookie has decided to walk away for good, she takes extra steps to show Angelo how important he is to her. She plans an extravagant dinner to meet Angelo’s mom, but utterly fails when everything does not go according to plan.
Mrs. Diana Dubois (Phylicia Rashad) told Cookie she was doubtful she would measure up to her rigid standards for someone dating her only son. Knowing Cookie to be a fighter who gets what she wants, she then takes this as a challenge despite her shortcomings that evening.

Jamal’s Song Opens Up Cookie’s Past
Jamal (Jussie Smollett) also falls off the wagon and ends up doing drugs again. His producer D-Major (Tobias Truvillion) even provides the stash for him at the cost of being able to make music again.
With Jamal struggling to get his career back, he creates a song that instead drives Cookie to unearth her past. In a montage of homemade clips for a music video, Cookie’s relationship with her father was revealed. Apparently, things took a tragic turn when Cookie explained how she blamed herself for her father’s death after choosing to date Lucious.
What to Expect on Empire Season 3 Episode 8
In a recent interview with Complex, Trai Byers (who plays the role of Andre) revealed how this season definitely puts the spotlight on his character.
“Andre has been more of a catalyst for those who can’t sing. He is the example of those who are the odd man out or the black sheep of the family,” he said.
True enough, Andre may or may not be aware that he is following his father’s footsteps in terms of getting what he wants no matter what it takes. Just to please his new girlfriend Nessa (Sierra A. McClaine), he takes Freda Gatz (Bre-Z) to an event where both artists collaborate on a song.
The clincher here is that Lucious previously warned Nessa’s uncle Shyne (rapper Xzibit) that any music deal must first go through him. Just before the episode ended, fans saw how cunning Shyne was by recording the performance using his phone. Certainly, this will spell out more trouble especially for Andre going against his dad.
At this point, Empire Season 3 only gets even more exciting. There is only one episode left before the fall finale, so brace yourselves for another crazy ride next week!
Empire airs Wednesdays at 9PM EST on FOX.
