It’s one thing to drop out of an Ivy league and entirely another thing to be back to speak at the commencement. Facebook CEO finds himself in such serendipity, thanks to his immense success. After dropping out of Harvard, Mark Zuckerberg went on to become a billionaire and more so – a success story. Much like his friend and fellow Harvard dropout Bill Gates, Mark is due to address the commencement of class of 2017. Case in point, Bill Gates addressed a similar commencement event a decade ago.
Mark Zuckerberg – Harvard Connection
Mark made it to Harvard’s doorsteps in 2002 and got into the swim of things soon. Besides, he began to look at the bigger picture early on. Come 2004, he was contemplating an exit from Harvard after developing a penchant towards social networking. On Feb. 4, 2004, Mark released the earliest version of his brainchild – Facebook. Perhaps, this took him all the way to Palo Alto, CA. Subsequently, paving way for one of the biggest thing in the internet realm.
Now 32 years of age, Zuckerberg has a net worth in the excess of $55 billion. After going public in 2012, Facebook is a billion dollar industry likely to become trillion dollar worth some time down the road. Needless to say, Facebook has become part and parcel of the mundane life. Its founder being the part of a commencement will certainly up the ante for Harvard and students alike.
Harvard Honorary Degree
In her statement, Harvard President Drew Faust candidly said that the decision to include Mark was a ‘no-brainer’, reports Business Insider. Furthermore, the President took the opportunity to acknowledge Facebook’s significance in the contemporary world. “A far-reaching impact”, she says, “a platform for global interaction.”
In the wake of Harvard’s decision to welcome Mark for an addressing, the latter will receive an honorary degree too. As Drew puts it, Mark’s drive to change the world with his technology is truly commendable. Not to mention, Mark’s plethora of charity causes and philanthropy. He and his wife Priscilla Chan have pledged most of their money to their charitable foundation already.
To commemorate the announcement, Harvard released a video of an interaction between Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg. In the said video, Mark asks Bill for any advise for his talk during the 366th commencement event. Considering Harvard’s long history, Mark’s address will go down in the history books of the prestigious institution.
The irony lies in the fact that Mark Zuckerberg will address a group of elite students to aspire big, minus the dropping out part. The commencement event is on May 25.
