Titan girl group SNSD’s main dancer, Hyoyeon, finally released her solo single! Mystery, SNSD Hyoyeon new MV, was released last December 1. After getting a break for being the only female member in YOUNIQUE unit, the dancer ultimately got her chance to become a soloist, thanks to SM Station. As of today, the music video has 2.6 million views on YouTube.
However, a netizen raised concern after pointing out that Hyoyeon may have copied Ariana Grande’s style during the former’s promotions for her new single. After making that claim, more and more netizens began to notice the similarities between the two artists.
SNSD Hyoyeon New MV: What are the similarities to Ariana Grande?
According to the netizen, Hyoyeon was sporting Ariana Grande’s signature look from the latter’s Side to Side music video. The hairstyle was a half-up ponytail coming through a hole on the cap. Moreover, the netizen also commented that Hyoyeon also copied the outfit and style in general. In one of Grande’s live performance of Side to Side, the singer was sporting a two-piece white outfit with a long sheer coat over it. Some screenshots from Hyoyeon’s music video shows her wearing a white cropped top, loose training pants, and a similar long coat.
As reported by All KPop, the netizen concluded: “Even in the past, there were a lot of suspicions that Girls’ Generation’s stage outfits were plagiarisms, but the only, unconvincing feedback was that those were ‘hommages,’ and then, without even self-reflecting, they again steal the styles of overseas singers, which is a bit annoying and disgraceful. Also, I feel like they’re pushing the oversized coat, bustier, and wide pants as the main outfit for her ‘Side to Side’ promotions, so geez… In conclusion, I view this as clear plagiarism because they copied not only the hair but also the image as is from the representative main image of Ariana’s single ‘Side to Side.’ Because in entertainment, an image soon becomes a product.”
Reactions From Both Parties
After the netizen pointed out his or her suspicions, fans began to react at the claims. Some noticed the similarities while others rushed to Hyoyeon’s defense. One even commented: “And since when did having the same hairstyle meant plagiarism?”
As of the moment, Hyoyeon or her agency SM Entertainment have not made any statements regarding the SNSD Hyoyeon new mv “plagiarism” accusations.
