Rogue One A Star Wars Story: What Has Been Confirmed So Far?

Disney and Lucasfilm finally had a glimpse of the Star Wars-spinoff Rogue One A Star Wars Story… a full 28 minutes of it, by the way. The production revealed the footage to reporters at Skywalker Ranch last week.

The story tells how this band of rebels who aim to steal plans for the Death Star, which was the event that sets into motion the plot of the original Star Wars series in 1977. The 28-minute footage did not reveal the actual time and story line, but instead set up a world in the brink of extinction and rebellion with the Empire’s Stormtroopers roaming the streets in search for dissidents.

In Rogue One A Star Wars Story, we’ll meet the protagonist Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones). Her parents, Galen (Mads Mikkelsen) and Lyra (Valene Kane) are of particular interest to the Empire and to Director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn). There, we’ll see Jyn forming an alliance with a group of rebels who is on a “dangerous mission” to stop the Empire from using the Death Star to destroy the planet.

Although movie essentially takes us to the world of 1977’s Star Wars with its costumes, characters, and sets, it is separated from the original series in such a way that it takes the audience to “planets and environs” that we haven’t seen before. A beach and a marketplace, for example, were featured in Rogue One A Star Wars Story.

The film’s director, Gareth Edwards, told Fox News that it feels he started something with Rogue One A Star Wars Story. The footage also set the stage for many of the movie’s principle characters such as Alliance Captain Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker), Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen).

The future of Rogue One A Star Wars Story

Rogue One A Star Wars Story, which opens in theaters on December 16, is the first in a three planned spinoff films set in the Star Wars universe. The others will include a story of the young Han Solo in 2018. It is important to note that this spinoff is separate from the main trilogy, which started with The Force Awakens in 2015 and the upcoming Episode VIII next year.
