Rogue One Blu-ray Reveals The Process Of Rebuilding Princess Leia’s Young Face

While Star Wars fans wait for more The Last Jedi news to come along, they can chew on the DVD and Blue-ray for Rogue One. The standalone adventure of Jyn Erso and her ragtag crew was released to positive reviews last Christmas season. With the release of the Blu-ray are a good load of featurettes to bite into.

One of them details a brief, but a certainly nostalgic moment of the film: the “cameo” appearance of young Princess Leia. Apparently, getting the moment right took a lot more effort than anticipated.

The Princess and the Governor

The featurette, titled The Princess and The Governor, shows how special effects were used to bring Princess Leia, just as she was in Episode IV: A New Hope, onto the screen in 2017. For a moment, the scene looks almost like the result of some serious time travel: Carrie Fischer’s recognizable face must have had long-time fans everywhere picking up their jaws.

But getting the scene right required extensive effort from the huge visual effects team. It’s Ingvild Deila who portrays Leia in the film; she plays out the scene with motion capture dots on her face. The team then gets to work overlaying her face with some CGI magic.

And it was hard work to get it right, too. The amount of detail that went into the effect caused the team “many sleepless nights”. But LucasFilm president Kathleen Kennedy explains that the creative decision to include Leia was based on one presumption: that they would be able to make her believable.

The same mindset was applied to the reappearance of Governor Tarkin. In Rogue One, Tarkin was played Guy Henry before the face of Peter Cushing was overlaid on his body to impressive effect.

No Deleted Scenes

Sadly, the tradition of including deleted scenes in the Blu-ray and DVD is not followed for Rogue One. So some of the clips that fans spotted in the trailer, before ultimately being left out of the final cut, may sadly never see the light of day.

Instead, fans can content themselves with a slew of other extras.

One featurette delves deeper into the faith of Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen). That lets us know a little more about the warrior who spawned a hundred “I am one with the Force” memes. A few others take a closer look at the characters of Saw Gerrera (Forrest Whitaker) and the droid K-2SO.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story comes out on Blu-ray and DVD on April 4, 2017.
