He’s already run the Maze. He’s fought through the Scorch Trials. But perhaps the biggest challenge for Dylan O’Brien has been making up lost time to film Maze Runner 3 (The Death Cure).
Last March 2016, O’Brien was injured on set while filming The Death Cure. He was apparently run over by a car in a stunt gone wrong, and thereafter, production was indefinitely postponed. But now he’s back, and a couple of weeks ago was spotted with the cast, looking better than ever. Amidst concerns that The Death Cure would face further production difficulties, the film is still set to release in January 2018. That’s less than year of delay from its original February 2017 release.
What can we look forward to with the Maze Runner himself back on his feet?
The Death Cure – What To Expect
The last we saw of Dylan O’Brien’s Thomas and the Gladers, they were readying to take the fight to WCKD. Now dealing with more than just Grievers, their new foe was Ava Paige (Patricia Clarkson). Minho had been taken as a prisoner, and Teresa had betrayed the Right Arm by leading WCKD straight to them. This sets up The Death Cure to be the most action-packed film of the trilogy yet. And judging by the extent of the stunts Dylan O’Brien had to work through before getting injured, it certainly looks that way.
Most interestingly, it looks like The Death Cure is going to be quite divergent from its source, just as The Scorch Trials was. The James Dashner novels made it a point of making the Gladers immune to the virus that wiped out the world. Meanwhile, the film version seems to have stripped them of that immunity (sorry, Winston).
Due to this, some fans believe that a portion of The Death Cure will turn into a rescue mission for Minho. That would make for a more cinematic experience – and it would give Dylan O’Brien, Thomas Sangster, and company to juice the film for as long as possible. After all, director isn’t planning to put The Maze Runner through the Hunger Games treatment. This last film isn’t being split into two movies.
Whether the plot speculation turns out right, however, remains to be seen.
Dylan O’Brien fans will also be glad to hear that his new project, American Assassin, now has a release date. The Lionsgate film stars O’Brien as a CIA black ops recruit instructed in the ways of counter-terrorism. Michael Keaton and Taylor Kitsch join him in the cast. It will be out on September 5, 2017.
Not too shabby for a guy who had multiple broken bones just a year ago.
