Deadpool was probably one of the biggest surprise hits of 2016. A character as infamous as the Merc with a Mouth needed all the help he could get for a successful film. After all, Fox didn’t exactly have the best track record when it comes to superhero films (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, anyone?).
Fortunately, the film hit all the right R-rated notes. And Deadpool 2 has been greenlit to go thanks, in part, to Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) and Colossus (Stefan Kapicic).
Fans, who have watched Deadpool, will certainly remember the pair of X-Men. Together with Deadpool himself, they set up a great (and hilarious) team-up for the film’s climax. And now they’re coming back.
A Colossal Return!
The return of the duo was confirmed by writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. “I think we can say. Yeah, they’ll be in the sequel,” Reese said, in a Collider interview. “Yeah, they’ll at least make an appearance,” Wernick added.
“An appearance” doesn’t really say plenty about how much the characters will factor into the sequel’s plot. But there are basically two ways this could go. On one hand, they could both reprise major roles in Deadpool 2; that would be a treat. Colossus, a huge onscreen presence both figuratively and literally, made a much bigger impression than the character ever did in the X-Men movies. As the closest thing the film had to an actual moral compass, it was hilarious to watch Deadpool patronizing him over and over.
Negasonic Teenage Warhead was a surprise as well. Though one of the lesser-known characters of the Marvel Universe, Hildebrand still made an impact with her quiet scowling and, well, mini-atomic explosions. Her inclusion in the film was a result of a swap that Fox had made with Marvel. In exchange for the right to use Negasonic, Fox offered back to Marvel the license to Ego The Living Planet. (Ego will make an appearance in this year’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2).
New Faces for Deadpool 2
But on the other hand, the pair may be given reduced roles. This would allow Cable more screen time. We know that the sequel will feature the telekinetic superhero, a longtime buddy of Deadpool in the comics. Deadpool 2 will also supposedly feature Cable’s partner, Domino, who has every potential to steal the show as well.
All of this is being pushed by fans as a set-up for a movie featuring the X-Force – an offshoot group of heroes from the X-Men. If the sequel turns out to be another irreverent hit, then there’s no saying how much more we’ll see of these characters.
