5 Seasons of Madness
Like many other YouTube sensations, Peter Shukoff and Lloyd Ahlquist started off pretty small. Both were comedians, with Peter playing the guitar in various bars and shows, and Lloyd previously managing a comedy theater. The idea for historical figures rap battling against each other, with the contestants trying to burn each other with verses, was first suggested by Lloyd as an improve skit. Eventually, they decided that YouTube was a better format, and shot the first battle, John Lennon vs. Bill O’Reilly, on a $50 budget.

The following two battles, Darth Vader vs. Adolf Hitler and Abraham Lincoln vs. Chuck Norris, were produced on minimal budgets as well. The novel idea caught on, though, and the channel really took off in early 2011. Four seasons have followed featuring figures of every kind: from writers (Dr. Seuss vs. William Shakespeare), to even presidential candidates (Donald Trump vs. Hillary Clinton).
5 seasons later, and the channel is sitting at 14 million subscribers. And sure, fans might certainly enjoy the performances and random match-ups. But the channel’s success also come from the battles’ wit and writing, integrating each figure’s actual histories, successes and failures, into their verses. In an interview with Forbes, NicePeter says the show really forced him to raise his standard of comedy, bringing the hilarious out with the subtle.
