Miss Universe 2016 news made the internet explode as fans watched who the rightful candidate will take home the crown. After the three-hour beauty pageant, Miss France Iris Mittenaere was crowned this year’s winner.
Seeing how avid Filipinos are when it comes to beauty pageant, and how much many yearned for Maxine Medina to get a back-to-back victory after Pia Wurtzbach was crowned Miss Universe 2015, many were quite disappointed. Not only because Medina not only did not get the crown, but because she did not even get to the Top 3. Many are attributing this to the question and answer portion, where Medina went first.
Many speculated that she ideally had a good shot at winning. However, prior to the main day, netizens and fans were already pouring in hate for the candidate’s English speaking skills and ability to think while being put on the spotlight.
Miss Medina’s track record of being put “on the spot” have been criticized many. And it seems as if their fears came true from last night’s events. Many deemed that it seems that she let the crown slip away from her reach because of her nerves.
Miss Universe 2016: Maxine Medina’s answer made some fans cringe
The annual beauty pageant showcases how amazing women from all over the world have long prepared for the event. In that sense, the Philippines’ Maxine Medina was expected to be confident inside and out. Instead, people saw a nervous and anxious candidate when she appeared for the question and answer portion of the contest.
When host Steve Harvey asked her the question, Maxine had a Filipino translator beside her. Much to the confusion of fans, she still answered in English. Many were under the impression that the 26-year-old candidate should have responded in Filipino as well.
Maxine was asked, “What is the most significant change you’ve seen in the world in the last 10 years?”
Her answer, “In the last 10 years of being here in the world, I saw all the people bringing in one event like this in Miss Universe. It’s something big to us that we are one. As one nation, we are all together. Thank you. Maraming salamat po.”
Fans took to various social media channels to give out their own answers when some felt Maxine failed to give a “better” answer. Avid followers of the pageant will remember that Maxine has had some experiences of being unable to control her nervousness once she gets overwhelmed. In a video, she was caught saying that Imelda Marcos invented the terno, but she was quick to explain that she meant to say “popularized” instead of “invented.” Terno is an iconic Filipino dress that was always worn by former first lady Imelda Marcos.

Pia Wurtzbach, Fans still be proud of Maxine Medina
While many viewers raised eyebrows, there were still fans who stood by the lady’s side. Top 6 is amazing after all!
Some even took to Facebook and Twitter to share that being in such a grand event will definitely make you nervous. Others say that Maxine did answer fairly well regardless. Either way, the Philippines still made it to top 6 and that is something to be happy about.

Some also said that it was the translator’s mistake. The question was translated differently so Maxine Medina’s answer was not in line with the original question in English. Whatever the case, Maxine Medina did her best. Crown or no crown, she’s a queen in her own right.
