VIXX: Here Are The Reasons Why They’re The Concept Kings Of KPop

KPop is known for catchy pop tunes with choreography that ranges from simple to complicated. Each KPop idol has a moniker. For example, SHINee are the “Dancing Kings of KPop” while SISTAR are the “Summer Queens of KPOP”. But when it comes to the theatrical side of the normally bubbly KPop, there is a group who rules them all: VIXX.

The six-member boy group debuted in 2012 under Jellyfish Entertainment and is the agency’s first idol group. This made them label mates with prominent soloists like Sung Si Kyung, Seo In Guk, and Park Hyoshin. The members of the group are the winners from the survival show MyDol. Pronounced as “vicks”, the group’s name means Voice, Visual, Value in Excelsis. Some of their most popular songs are Voodoo DollHyde, and Error.

All About VIXX

Like with a typical boy group, VIXX started out with a cute, pop single called Super Hero. The music video for the song had the usual attributes of a conventional KPop video: a group of good-looking flower boys and color bursting everywhere. However, things took a turn in 2013, when the sextet released On and On.

In the music video for On and On, the group took an edgier, darker look. All members sported heavy eyeliner and eye shadows, vampire-like contact lenses, and a song that conveyed about a man ready to get hurt for his lady love. From then on, the group began to live through their reputation as the Concept Kings of KPop.

An Arsenal Of Dark Yet Diverse Concepts

The Concept Kings tackled a variety of themes for every comeback they release. The members are heavily involved with the production, choreography, and concept scheming per album. Here are some of the concepts that they have tackled so far:

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

In 2013, the group released Hyde, which was their first mini-album. The title track, which has the same name as the album, was all about a man suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder. In the song, the man’s good and bad personalities continue to battle as he confesses to his lover about his condition.

Voodoo Dolls

In the late quarter of 2013, the group snagged their first ever win with their song Voodoo Doll. There, the members transformed into, well, voodoo dolls who are very faithful to their master. It is a twisted love song that portrays a man’s undying loyalty to his love, even if she is already killing him.

Cyborgs

Love is one of the most common theme in songs. Error, which was released in 2014, was all about a man who broke down after his relationship ended. The man was so heartbroken that he converted himself into a cyborg. However, an error occurred when memories came back to him after accidentally meeting up with his ex.

Gods

In their latest trilogy Conception, VIXX took a metaphorical turn in their concepts. They transformed into mythological gods and their music videos portrayed stories that had fans come up with multiple theories about what really happened. And so far, the group and Jellyfish Entertainment keep their lips sealed regarding the real meaning for Conception.
