In the age of social media, Hollywood stars are never free from judgment, especially because fans are quick to notice even the smallest detail. Longtime friends, Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez are now put under the spotlight after fans noticed how Gomez seemed to have missed sending the 1989 singer’s birthday wishes this year.
Of course, speculations became rife saying how the two hitmakers are actually not friends anymore. Despite both celebs appealing more towards the “teenybopper” age of today, read on to know why the rest of the internet should care.
Taylor Swift Selena Gomez: How did they end up being best friends?
Swift and Gomez have long been friends but they actually have their ex-boyfriends to thank for their best friendship. The Blank Space hitmaker and the Hands To Myself singer dated Jonas brothers at the same time. Selena Gomez dated Nick Jonas while Taylor Swift was with Joe Jonas for a minute. Not long after, Gomez told Vogue magazine that Swift is “my sister.”
Mirror also reports that Gomez gave quite a detailed explanation how she and Swift started being close.
“Taylor and I dated Jonas brothers together. We met when she was 18. I was 15 or 16. She was so great to me. Then we became best friends. She would fly out to see me when I was going through something really hard. We’d eat a lot of fattening food and vent,” Gomez said.

Taylor Swift Selena Gomez: What’s the real deal between them now?
Now, since the internet just made it easier for people to poke its cyber nose in people’s lives, rumors are making rounds that the once inseparable duo is actually “feuding.” Swift celebrated her 27th birthday last Dec. 13, and surprisingly, there was no greeting from Justin Bieber’s ex-girlfriend (still referring to Selena).
Of course, many know that Taylor’s squad includes the biggest name in teenybopper fandom, including Gigi Hadid, Karlie Kloss, as well as Martha Hunt. While they all wished their gal pal a happy birthday, not the slightest trace of Gomez’ well wishes surfaced online.
Taylor Swift Selena Gomez: Maybe greetings weren’t actually done through Twitter?
With the lurking fans quite shocked after Gomez didn’t make her presence felt during Swift’s big day, it actually shouldn’t come quite as a shock. A few months back, Selena Gomez announced how she was struggling with Lupus and even experienced “anxiety, panic attacks, and depression,” HNGN notes. Gomez has been keeping a low profile on social media after her announcement and her last post was during Thanksgiving.
You could be shipping the Swift-Gomez friendship without seeing the real issue of how Gomez has been struggling to keep herself together after making the public declaration. Without the grand public gesture from Gomez this year that sent fans in a speculating frenzy, fans should truly show their support for the two by giving them the privacy they need just as real besties would. On a tangent, Gomez probably sent Swift an endearing text message full of cat emojis.
