Scarlett Johansson is super talented and gorgeous, yes. Not many know she also has politics running under her skin. Her opinions about abortion and women’s rights and have been widely talked-about and criticized.
She’s been in the headlines recently because of her opposition to President Donald Trump. Just days after Trump’s inauguration, Johansson was on the streets for Women’s March. She was also a headline speaker there to champion and pledge her support for Planned Parenthood.
Scarlett Johansson Will Continue Being Political
She doesn’t plan to stop criticizing this government. Scarlett Johansson told People: “I don’t plan on not using my voice anytime soon.” Apparently, she has always been open to social and political issues. Her parents and her grandmother have always encouraged her to be “involved.”
Although the actress highly guarded her personal life and rarely dabbles with social media, she opened up about her Planned Parenthood experience. During her speech at Women’s March, Johansson said she used the clinic when she was 15 years old and living in New York.
Her clinician at the controversial Planned Parenthood was the one who told her to go to her pediatrician for a referral. Afterward, she was “compassionate and professional” to treat her for regular checkups, STD, and cancer screenings. “No judgment. No questions asked. Planned Parenthood provided a safe place where I could be treated with gentle guidance.”
During her speech, the actress shared her sister’s story. She relied on the cancer and STD screenings, the birth control, the safe abortion and pregnancy planning that Planned Parenthood provided for her. Johansson said over 2.5 million women rely on these even in these “uncertain and anxious times.”
She has been highly criticized because of her views on abortion, saying at one point that Planned Parenthood does “invaluable work.” In fact, people did not go kind on her when she received an award at the 2016 Power of Women Los Angeles because of her advocating PP.
Scarlett Not Dabbling Into Politics
Johansson is open to criticisms, saying that her being vocal comes with a hefty price tag. It’s “okay,” she said when asked about people coming at her because of her views.
Fans of her movies need not flinch, however. She doesn’t plan to ditch Hollywood and joining politicians in Washington, D.C. She simply wants them to recognize women’s rights to decide about their bodies.
In fact, when Scarlett Johansson went to the Oscars rehearsals, she was still awestruck by the magnitude of what she’s working on.
