There was a time when Mel Gibson was one of the tenets of Hollywood blockbusters. His work in Braveheart, What Women Want, Ransom, Lethal Weapon, Forever Young were well received. Oh, those years are gone now.
It all started in 2004 with his deeply polarizing and possibly anti-Semitic The Passion of the Christ. Then, a couple of years later, police arrested him for drunk driving. Besides, he made an anti-Jew tirade against the arresting officer. The hate for Gibson on Twitter now is almost offending, until you remember what he did.
Mel Gibson Is A “Terrible Person”
Mel Gibson is receiving all kinds of hate from netizens on Twitter. Most of them are attacking the Academy Awards for honoring his work. Anne Helen Petersen commented: “Mel Gibson’s smiling face in the front rows is currently the #1 reminder of this institution’s moral bankruptcy.”
Even Casey Affleck faced the attacks. “Casey Affleck and Mel Gibson are proof that white maleness always triumphs over gross, abusive, and manipulative behavior.” Affleck, the younger brother of actor Ben, was involved in at least two sexual harassment allegations in 2010.
Gibson, on the other hand, repeatedly hit his former girlfriend. In 2010, there were recordings of his verbal and physical abuse of Oksana Grigorieva. In one recording, he called his girlfriend “a f*cking pig in heat.” He also admitted hitting her while she was carrying their baby in another recording.
Asked by his girlfriend why would he hit someone who carries a child, he responded: “You f*cking deserved it.” After a year, the actor-director pleaded no contest to misdemeanor battery and received three years of probation.
Is Hollywood Too Forgiving?
But right this very moment, Gibson is back on the Hollywood red carpet, seemingly accepted once again by his peers. Have they forgotten the anti-Semitic, homophobic rants and the domestic violence? The fact that he attended it with his now girlfriend, who could also be his granddaughter, is just the icing on top of the cake.
Hacksaw Ridge, the movie he directed, is nominated tonight. Gibson is up for the Best Director award once again. Andrew Garfield, who starred in the film, can take home the Best Actor trophy.
How deeply painful is it for the groups Mel Gibson offended to see this actor-director flashing the Alt Right Movement hand signal on live TV? Yes, unless it’s not clear, Gibson is the perfect model of white supremacy in America.
