Where is the respect? That seems to be the question many fans and Michael Jackson’s family is asking the people behind Sky Arts’ Urban Myths. The comedy series tapped Joseph Fiennes to portray the late King of Pop.
The portrayal of a black man by a white man has cultural insensitivity written all over it. In the TV series’ trailer, Fiennes wears prosthetics to look like Jackson. Paris Jackson, the late King of Pop’s daughter, took offense over Fiennes’ portrayal of her father.
Michael Jackson’s Daughter was Fired up on Twitter
Fiennes portrayal of the iconic superstar, defining most of the 80s and the 90s sickened many fans. None, however, can compete with how Michael Jackson’s daughter, Paris, feels about the TV series. In a series of tweets, Paris said she was “incredibly offended” by it.
She added that the show makes her want to vomit. Even MJ’s nephew, Taj Jackson, made his sentiments known to the public. In a tweet, he said that there are no words that could express the “blatant disrespect” their family is dealing with because of the show.
Urban Myths also Disrespected Elizabeth Taylor and Marlon Brando
The comedy series did not just disrespect the King of Pop only but also Elizabeth Taylor, Paris said. Answering a tweet by a Michael Jackson fan account, Paris said: “It angers me to see how obviously intentional it was for them to be this insulting, not just towards my father, but my godmother liz as well.”
She added that the show damaged legacies of her father, Taylor, and Marlon Brando by the fictional retelling of a road trip the three supposedly took in the aftermath of 9/11. According to the series’ synopsis, the three went on a road trip from New York to California after the terrorist attack.
Paris was not amused, however. MJ, Taylor, and Brando “worked through blood, sweat and tears for ages to create such profound and remarkable legacies.” Fiennes’ portrayal of Michael Jackson in Urban Myths was “shameful,” she added in her tweet.
