January is about to end but we have to say goodbye to another veteran act in Hollywood. Mary Tyler Moore died at the age of 80 on Jan. 25. The actress has been known to battle several sicknesses in her later years.
Moore began her career as a commercial model. She got her big break in The Dick Van Dyke Show, where she starred as Laura Petrie, the titular character’s wife. In 1970, Moore got her own newsroom sitcom that was named after her. The show aired from 1970 and ended in 1977. Since then, Moore appeared in various TV shows, films, and even Broadway plays.

On Jan. 25, it was announced that the veteran actress died in Greenwhich Hospital in Greenwhich, Connecticut. The cause of death was not revealed immediately. However, TMZ reported that the Dick Van Dyke Show star’s death was caused by several caused.
According to TMZ, Moore’s death certificate cited that she died because of cardiopulmonary arrest. The factors that contributed to it were diabetes mellitus, pneumonia, and hypoxia, a condition where little or no oxygen reach the body’s tissues. It was also written that Moore was pronounced dead at 2:15 in the afternoon. In addition to that, no autopsy was performed on the actress.
The announcement of her death shocked many people, especially her loyal fans. It was the actress’ representative who broke the news to the media.
“Today, Mary Tyler Moore passed away in the company of her friends and husband of 33 years, Dr. S. Robert Levine. She was 80 years old. Mary will be remembered forever as a groundbreaking actress, producer, and advocate for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation,” the representative said.
Page Six reported that the actress was laid to rest in a private ceremony at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Fairfield. The funeral was attended by her family and closest friends.

Back when Moore was 33 years old, she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. In one of her memoirs, she admitted that she suffered from alcoholism. And in May 2011, she underwent surgery to remove meningioma, which was a set of tumors in the meninges. Thankfully, the tumors were benign and the actress went on to recover from the surgery.
Despite starting small in showbiz, Moore became one of the most prominent actresses in Hollywood. She is known to portray characters who often break the norms about women. This made her into a famous feminist icon, inspiring many actresses like Tina Fey and Amy Schumer. So many people look up to Mary Tyler Moore. Even Oprah Winfrey called her “one of those women who was a light.”
