If singer-songwriter Madonna is living in a material world, she’s now sharing it with two new daughters. The musical icon has shared that she’s adopted two twin girls, Estere and Stelle, from Malawi. This brings her family to a nice even six kids.
The singer made announcement via an Instagram post. Her photo shows her walking down a dirt road, presumably in Malawi, in a yellow dress and white cardigan. Holding her hands on either side of her are the twin girls, wearing identical blue dresses. One of them is wearing a white hat, as if to match the one Madonna is wearing.
“I can officially confirm I have completed the process of adopting twin sisters from Malawi,” she wrote, “and am overjoyed that they are now part of our family. I am deeply grateful to all those in Malawi who helped make this possible, and I ask media to please respect our privacy during this transitional time.”
A Large Family
Madonna’s family of six kids is a little bigger than most, but the artist looks happy all the same. Her daughter Lourdes Maria, whom she had with Carlos Leon, is now 20 years old. She’s attending the University of Michigan, her mother’s old Alma Mater. Madonna also has a 16-year-old son, Rocco Ritchie, whom she had with ex-husband Guy Ritchie.
The singer had adopted two other kids before Estere and Stelle. One was David Banda, 11, whom she adopted in 2006 just months before splitting with Guy. The other is Mercy James, 10, adopted in 2009. All four of her adopted children were adopted from Malawi.
There are 650 Orphans at Home of Hope where Estere and Stelle have lived for 4 years since they were 5 days old. Run by the generous and compassionate Rev. Chipeto and his daughter Lucy, Raising Malawi has been working with HOH for over 10 years since I met my son David there. If you would like to get involved by volunteering or donations go to. She’s currently unmarried, but that doesn’t seem to pose a problem for the Ray of Light singer. She certainly doesn’t lack for the means to care for them; as of 2016, Forbes pegs her net worth at $550 million. Madonna is frequently seen with her children in public. She also takes the time to fly to Malawi with her adopted kids, giving them the chance to visit their motherland and appreciate their African heritage.
Still, some controversies have cropped up among the adoptions. Mercy James, especially, has been caught in the middle of a kid of “custody war” between her biological family and Madonna.
According to the best friend of her biological mother – who passed away shortly after giving birth in 2006 – Mercy was never intended to be gone so long from her family. Her grandmother also says that they’ve been trying to reconnect with her over the years. According to them, they had apparently been fooled into letting the adoption happen, not knowing that the separation would be permanent.
Naturally, Madonna’s spokespersons have denied the accusations and maintain they’ve only ever acted in good faith with the family. Any thoughts? Drop them in the comments below!
