Emma Watson wants to clear one thing: she’s no diva. The Beauty and the Beast star wants to squash rumors that she’s difficult to work with. This came after she was reportedly offered the starring role in La La Land, which eventually went to Emma Stone.
What made the news so shocking is the fact that Watson turned down an award-winning role. It turned out La La Land’s role won every major acting award for Stone. It was also one of the biggest winners during the award season from January to February.
Emma Watson Explains Why She Turned Down La La Land Role
Emma Watson said that one of most frustrating things is when names get easily attached to projects “to build anticipation” even before everything is set on stone. She explained that when the role in La La Land was offered to her, she was already signed up for Beauty and the Beast.
She can’t do both, obviously, because Beauty and the Beast requires a lot of legwork for her. It wasn’t a movie “I could just sort of step into.” She had to train to ride a horse, to dance, and to sing. She had to be in London to be able to do all that.
“This wasn’t a movie I could just kind of parachute into. I knew I had to do the work, and I had to be where I had to be. So, you know, scheduling conflict-wise, it just didn’t work out.”
In a report from Cosmopolitan, quoting the actress’ interview with Sirius XM’s Town Hall, Watson said she certainly cannot do two movies at once. The actress doesn’t want to sacrifice the quality of the movies just so she can do them both. Watson rose to fame for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter series.
As we all know, both La La Land and Beauty and the Beast require a lot of singing and dancing for its stars.
Not The First Time She Was Called A Diva
Her rejection of La La Land was not the first time Watson was called a diva. Back in 2016, she has been vocal about wanting to get paid the same as her male counterparts.
She understood the stigma, however. She said back then that actresses weren’t supposed to talk about money because people would think they were divas or they were difficult to work with. Watson said it’s fine with her if people think she’s being a diva.
She wants to do the right thing, which is to advocate for equal pay. No matter where women work—in tea plantations in Kenya, in the Wall Street, or in Hollywood—Emma Watson said they are not being paid equally.
