Humanitarian, actress, and former internet punchline Lindsay Lohan is calling to support Donald Trump. The 30 years old actress sat down with Daily Mail for a Facebook Live interview last week. In it, she suggested it was time to “join” the US President. This was despite her initial fears of returning to the United States after spending time in Greece, Turkey, and considering conversion to Islam.
Fears that were… well, due to Donald Trump and his travel ban on Muslim-majority countries. “I think always in the public eye you’re gonna be scrutinized, and he is the president. We have to join him,” she said in the interview, “If you can’t beat him, join him.”
“I think it would be a positive thing for America to show their care and support,” Lindsay Lohan said, “And for him to experience what it’s like for these people… Experience how giving Turkey has been to the refugees and how many they have welcomed in.”
It’s not the first time that a call to support Trump has been made by stars. For instance, Matthew McConnaughey recently called for the need to “embrace” Trump, while encouraging constructive criticism on his administration. Lohan seems to be going down the same route, throwing weight behind Trump, with the caveat that the democratic voice remains heard.
Lindsay Lohan takes note of Turkey as an example to be followed: “(Prime Minister) Tayyip Erdogan has a very big heart, and his country stands by him,” the Mean Girls actress said. “I think we all need to unite like that.” Turkey has been taking in Syrian refugees – an action that Trump strongly stands against, in the interest of border protection.
A Possible Conversion
Calling to support Trump may have been particularly difficult for Lindsay Lohan, given her newfound interest in Islam, and the President’s supposed anti-Islamic rhetoric. Much of Trump’s policies and goals have been labelled as racist and xenophobic; they gave the actress pause about returning to the US.
Explaining her interest to the religion, Lohan says she’s been studying the Quran and that it has become a source of solace to her. Still, she admits that she hasn’t converted just yet:
“It’s a process to convert to anything. I respect all religions. It’s a beautiful religion and I am a very spiritual person. It’s something I’ve been studying. You can’t just convert overnight to a religion.”
