Betty White Needs Protection From 2016: A Look At This Horrible 2016

To say this year was horrible is a complete understatement. We didn’t only see a misogynist businessman win the White House, we also witnessed the deaths of David Bowie, Alan Rickman, Prince, Leonard Cohen, Alan Thicke, Muhammad Ali, George Michael, and Carrie Fisher. Now that 2016 is about to end, one man made it his mission to protect America’s most-loved grandmother, the 94-year-old Betty White.

Demetrios Hrysikos, a native of South Carolina, started a GoFundMe page that will pay for him to be a guard to White. The crowdfunding campaign will collect money from donors who want to protect the actress from the “evils” of 2016. Within 24 hours, Hrysikos reached his goal of $2,000 (276 people contributed to give $2,900).

2016 took many great artists, but not Betty White hopefully

According to the GoFundMe page, Hrysikos will stand guard for Betty White if she allows it. He said that he would guard her until Jan. 1, 2017 to ensure that she is safe from 2016. But in case White doesn’t want a Greek “guard” standing next to her throughout the rest of 2016, the proceeds will go to the Spartanburg Little Theatre.

Because 2016 has taken many great artists, contributing to SLT will surely make people like White, Fisher, and Bowie happy. SLT supports and helps budding talents.

Not many are impressed with Hrysikos offer, of course. Many people thought the campaign was just a scam, and that he merely wanted to take money off from well-meaning people. They said that if people really want to donate to the theater, they should just do it directly and without going through Hrysikos.

Others defended him. One commenter on the page said that if he had the money, he would definitely donate not only for White, but also for someone who made him laugh “during what is obviously one of the worst years.”

Twitter explodes with messages for White

On Twitter, fans are imploring the actress to take care of herself and to make sure that she is healthy. The Golden Girl and internet darling has yet to personally reply to the messages, though a representative said she is on vacation.

Jeff Witjas, White’s representative, said he and White had a deal that she would live at least 100 years old because he booked her to work.

Betty White is known for her roles on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Golden Girls, Hot In Cleveland, and Bones.
