2NE1 Breakup: Group Disbandment Confirmed; YG Entertainment Gets Flak

Last Friday, November 25, YG Entertainment announced that the 2NE1 breakup is confirmed. After seven years of being in the idol industry, the group finally disbanded and the agency said it would focus on the solo activities of each member. Members CL and Sandara Park have renewed their contracts but power vocal Park Bom will not be managed anymore by YG Entertainment.

Minzy, the group’s youngest member, officially left the group on April 5.  Although the group was supposedly going to continue as a trio from then on, the girls were not seen making group promotions. Their last release was their full length album “Crush”, which was released on February 14, 2014. In addition to that, their only activity last year was their surprise performance during the Mnet Asian Music Awards 2015. The girls performed their hit singles “Fire” and “I Am the Best”. This became the most viewed performance by a girl group during MAMA 2015.

What are the fans’ reaction?

It is not a surprise that fans were not too shocked with the 2NE1 breakup news. Disbandment rumors have been circulating since 2014 ever since Minzy removed 2NE1’s team name from her social media accounts. 2NE1 stopped most of their promotions in 2014  ever since member Bom became involved in a scandal where she illegally imported medication from the US. Members began to pursue solo projects: CL with her album “HELLO BI+CHES”, Sandara on her acting career, and Minzy with her new dance school Millennium Dance Academy.

So, who’s to blame for the disbandment?

Rumors say that it was the members’ fault why the group dissolved. YG Entertainment, however, gave an explanation why it was the best for the girls not to promote as 2ne1.

According to YG: “2NE1’s exclusive contract expired in May 2016, and with Minzy leaving 2NE1, we have reached the conclusion after extensive discussion with the remaining members to officially disband.

As 2NE1 was YG’s official girl group for seven years, we cannot begin to express how we feel, but we determined that it was too difficult to continue. Rather than waiting an unknown amount of time for 2NE1’s next promotions, we have decided to focus on the members’ solo activities.”

YG ended their statement by saying they’re thankful for all of the fans, both Korean and international, who have supported 2NE1 all throughout the years.
